Despite the clear benefits of inclusive education for students with intellectual disabilities, many receive special education services in separate classrooms due to challenging behaviors. In this workshop, attendees will learn about the foundation and features of positive behavioural interventions and supports (PBIS) and practical strategies for implementing PBIS to promote greater access to and meaningful participation in inclusive classrooms for students with intellectual disabilities.
During this dynamic workshop, teachers, educational assistants, administrators, aligned professionals, and parents will learn about practical and effective strategies, including but not limited to the following:
- Collaborative teaming practices
- Building inclusive universal supports using evidence-based practices for students with an intellectual disability and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles
- Function-based interventions that focus on prevention and instruction
- Building contextually relevant and socially valid behavior plans
Most importantly, participants will also have opportunities to brainstorm and build action plans for supporting students with intellectual disabilities across the continuum of supports that can be offered through the application of PBIS in inclusive classrooms.
